Bali, the island paradise located between Malaysia and Australia in southern Indonesia, has miles of beautiful beaches. But which ones are the best?

No. 5

Balangan Beach

Balangan.

This surfer’s paradise boasts white sand that is excellent for shaping into sandcastles and inexpensive bungalows with plenty of hammocks. If you’re new to surfing, plenty of freelance locals will show you how to shred for a small fee.

No. 4

Amed

The black volcanic rock on the shore may turn away the uneducated onlooker, but those with snorkel gear will soon find the real prize is in the water. Coral and underwater life is abundant here, and the local fishermen cook many a prized catch fresh out of the water.

No. 3

Geger

This five mile stretch of bliss is perfect for families, as it offers calm waters and hard packed sand perfect for swimming or playing volleyball, respectively. Many European and American ex-patriots can be found here enjoying the numerous restaurants located here. This is also one of the few beaches in Bali that allows topless sunbathing.

No. 2

Ungasan

The bad news is this stretch of beach is only accessible to guests of the Banyan Tree resort or the Karma Kandara resort. The good news is the American dollar has great buying power here, and this is known as one of the prettiest beaches in Indonesia. A cliff 400 feet above the water provides a dazzling view of the southernmost point of Bali, and down by the ocean the sand is fine and delicate. The water is calm during the day and surf-worthy at night.

No. 1

Bias Tugal

The best beach in Bali is also the most difficult to get to. You have to walk 500 meters to get to it from the ferry terminal of Padang Bai. Your reward is cal water in various shades of turquoise, fine white sand and swaying coconut trees. The current here is strong, so its recommended you stay on the beach and enjoy watching the boats come in and out of Padang Bay unless you’re an advanced swimmer.
